Principal’s Message

Dear Springer Community,

This Paw For Books, Scholastic Book Fair family night was amazing.  There were so many families enjoying the reading, our Furry Friends, shopping for books and the food trucks.  It was truly a family invite.  I want to thank the PTA book fair chair and committee and the teachers who helped make this an enjoyable event!

Just a reminder of Daylight Savings this weekend begins at 2:00 AM on Sunday, March 11.

Yearbook

Hello Springer,

This year, every student will receive a yearbook. 

You do not have to order or pay for one. Please read that again -- Every child will get a yearbook at the end of the year.  

Help us make this year's yearbook picture filled and send in pictures. We are using a new yearbook vendor (memory book) and their uploader tool is quick and stable. Instructions on how to upload are below.

   • If it does not automatically log you into the site, enter username: 410253677

   • Enter information about the photo and provide contact information in case the staff needs additional information.

   • Click "Save Details".

Springer STEM  Expo Is On March 22, 2018

We have over 150 projects to show at the STEM Expo.

It is a wonderful part of the experience to listen to the students explain their project in person. We need more help so each child has the opportunity to talk to a caring adult.

Cornerstone Corner

This month’s ABC book: “How Do I Stand In Your Shoes?” by Susan DeBell, Ph.D is a story about a girl named Miranda who has no patience for the other students in her class. She just doesn’t understand why they can’t be as smart and talented as she is, until she learns to start walking in their shoes.

Goals of lesson:

Ø Empower students to notice, name, and understand feelings or difficulties of others.

Ø Express and receive empathy from each other.

Ø Use the tools of bucket filling and the law of the lid to understand and care about others.

Ø Empathize with those that have received mean and hurtful messages digitally.

Consider using the following empathy building tools to reinforce this lesson at home:

Ø Listen without interrupting. Say, “Hmmm. What happened next?”

Ø Listen to the tone of the words.

Ø Look and watch people’s body language.

Ø Notice, name, and confirm the feelings.

When you “catch” kids modeling positive behaviors... Notice, Name it, and Celebrate it!

Student Ambassadors

The Spring Student Ambassadors are thrilled to announce the addition of 10 new members. The students are Shelby S, Alex G, Lorenzo G, Karina C, Meera M, Kendra P, Ryan T, Lauren M, Jonathan L, Emily M, and Alexander C. These students showed a strong desire to be a part of a bigger cause, both at a community level as well as a global level. They bring a wide array of new ideas and talents to our team and we cannot wait to get to work!

After School Clubs

Please check out our after school clubs starting in the Spring.  We have some new ones--Mighty Youth Runners, Run For Fun, and Hip-Hop Dance.  We would also like to welcome back our old favorites: Legos, Chess, Art, Speak/Debate, Springer Singers, Basketball, Tennis, Coding, Minecraft, Math Olympiad and Spanish.  Clickhere for the link.

(Next Generation Science Standards)

 DESCRIPTION:

In this one-hour parent session, STEM IST’s and LASD science teachers will share how students are building their understanding of science in order to make sense of the world around them through the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).  The NGSS provide a strong science education that equips students with the ability to think critically, analyze information, and solve complex problems.

Inclusion for All with the Inclusion Collaborative,  SELPA 1 CAC Parent Education Event

The Inclusion Collaborative (IC) leads the effort to provide ALL children in Santa Clara County with quality learning environments. Its focus is the successful inclusion of children with special needs in child care, preschool programs, early learning environments, and the community through education, advocacy and awareness.

When To Keep Your Child Home

Sometimes it is difficult, especially early in the morning, to know whether or not to send your child to school.  The following guidelines are indications that you should keep him/her home.  In this way, you are helping to control the spread of colds, flu, and other contagious illnesses.

Keep your child at home when he/she has any of the following symptoms:

You need to keep your child home until he/she has been symptom free without medication for 24 hours.

Also, NOTIFY THE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY if your child is exposed to or contracts chicken pox, mumps or measles or whooping cough (pertussis).  These conditions can be life threatening to students who are undergoing therapies that suppress their immune systems.

The following information is only a guide to common childhood health concerns. Call our District Nurse 650-537-8119 or personal health care provider for more information. Always bring a copy of a physician’s note to school and/or notify the school if your child will have an extended absence due to a health condition for 10 days or longer.

Become A Living Classroom Docent

Become a LIVING CLASSROOM docent... share your love of nature with kids!

It's time to plant tomatoes, dissect flowers, and make yummy pretzels from the wheat the students planted last Fall!  If you like all those things and more, please consider becoming a Living Classroom docent!  Living Classroom is looking for docents to help deliver hands-on garden-based lessons to the students of the Los Altos School District.  No experience necessary as we provide all the training needed!  Our Spring Docent Training will take place at theLASD iLearn Studio (201 Covington Road, Los Altos) from 9-Noon on Monday mornings in March (3/5, 3/12, 3/19 and 3/26).  Please clickHERE to view our Spring Training Flyer.  Apprentice-style training also available to those who can’t make our Monday morning trainings.

 A Note From The District Nurse

Pertussis Booster for Students in 6th grade:

Students currently in 6th grade must have proof of a Tdap or Dtap (Pertussis or Whooping Cough) booster given after their 7th birthday(after 10th birthday is recommended) in order to begin 7th grade in August of 2018. Please provide a copy of your child’s immunization record to your school office as soon as possible!

Please refer any questions regarding this requirement to our District Health Assistants:  Suzy Gough 302-1448 and Sandy Anderson 302-1449.
